Who Runs This Site

My name is Tom C. I drove for Uber in Sydney for over four years — nights and weekends alongside a regular day job. I started because I had a savings goal I wanted to hit faster than my salary alone would allow. Uber seemed like the most flexible way to add income without committing to a second job with fixed hours.

The first few months were more frustrating than profitable. I was driving at the wrong times and sitting in the wrong suburbs waiting for trips that never came. I did not understand why some nights produced steady surge pricing while others produced nothing. I was putting in the hours but not getting the return.

It took time — and a lot of trial and error — to work out where the demand actually was in Sydney, which nights were genuinely worth it, and which suburbs to position myself in rather than just waiting wherever I happened to be. Once I figured that out, the same hours produced significantly better results.

Why I Built This Site

When I was trying to figure all of this out, the useful information was almost impossible to find. Most articles online were written for American drivers — different tax rules, different platforms, completely different cities. The Australian content that did exist was either out of date or written by car rental companies and accounting software brands with something to sell.

Nobody had written the honest, specific, Sydney-and-Australia version of what I actually needed to know. So I started keeping my own notes. Earnings by suburb. Best hours by day of the week. What the GST and BAS obligations actually meant in practice. How much the car costs ate into the headline hourly rate.

I stopped driving when the savings goal was done. But the notes stayed useful — and eventually became this site.

What This Site Covers

WhatInvestment is written for two kinds of people. The first is someone considering driving for Uber or another rideshare or delivery platform, who wants honest information before committing — not inflated income claims, not a recruitment pitch. The second is someone already driving who wants to make more from the hours they are putting in.

The site covers Australia first. Other countries are being added as the research is done properly. I do not publish figures for a market I have not verified, and every article displays a Last Reviewed date so you can see how current the information is.

How the Information Is Researched

Everything here draws on personal experience, driver community forums, publicly available platform data, and ATO guidance. Earnings figures are presented as estimates with clear sourcing — not guarantees.

Tax content follows ATO guidelines as published at ato.gov.au. For anything involving your specific tax situation, the recommendation is always the same: speak with a registered tax agent who works with gig economy clients. You can find one through the Tax Practitioners Board at tpb.gov.au.
